Jesy Nelson is an English singer and songwriter born on 14 June 1991 in London, England. She was a member of a British girl group called Little Mix from 2011 to 2020. Little Mix is the highest-selling girl band in the world. Before Jesy departed from the group in 2020, Nelson released her documentary on BBC Three in 2019, titled Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out. 

Early Life

Jesy Nelson was born on 14 June 1991 in Romford, London, England. Her father, John Nelson, is a businessman, and her mother, Janis Nelson, is a Police Community Support Officer. Jesy’s parents separated when she was five years old.

Jesy Nelson went to Jo Richardson Community School and Abbs Cross Academy and Arts College in Hornchurch, London. She also attended the Sylvia Young and Yvonne Rhodes Theatre Schools. Before auditioning for The X Factor, Nelson worked as a barmaid in Dagenham. In 2020, Nelson said that, as a child, she had minor roles as an extra in About a Boy and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Time at The X Factor

Jesy Nelson auditioned as a solo artist on The X Factor. She got eliminated in the Bootcamp round and was placed into a four-piece group named ‘Faux Pas’ alongside Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirlwall, and Leigh-Anne Pinnock.

 Little Mix came in the form on 28 October 2011. Soon, they became the first girl band in the history of The X Factor to reach the finals. 

On 11 December 2011, Little Mix became the winner of the show. The first band ever in the history of the show to become the winner. The crew did a live performance of their first single, Cannonball, in the finals, which later came out worldwide.

Career With Little Mix

 Jesy Nelson has released six albums with the band DNA (2012), Salute (2013), Get Weird (2015), Glory Days (2016), LM5 (2018), and Confetti (2020).

Little Mix released their debut single ‘Wings’ in August 2012. A few months later, their debut album DNA came out in November. The album had a fantastic breakthrough. It charted no.3 in both Ireland and UK. In January 2013, the group signed a deal with Columbia Records.

The debut album DNA came out with three singles, ‘Wings,’ ‘DNA,’ and ‘Change Your Life. It was an amazing start to the journey of girls as a band. In the US, ‘Wings’ charted number 79 on Billboard Top 100. On 4 March 2013, ‘How ya Doin’ was announced as the final single from DNA. It featured Grammy-winning artist Missy Elliot.

Departure From The Band

On 14 February 2020, Little Mix took to their social media handles to announce the departure of Jesy Nelson from the band. Nelson’s reason for discontinuing the band was her mental health struggles. After her departure, the group announced they would continue as a trio.

‘Confetti’ was Jesy Nelson’s last album with the band.

Solo Career

In May 2021, Jesy Nelson announced that she had signed a record deal with Polydor Records and that she was releasing solo music later in the year. In early August, Nelson wiped her Instagram account in anticipation of her solo debut, named Boyz, featuring the famous rapper, Nicki Minaj.

Jesy Nelson explained that she was moving on because “being in the band has really taken a toll on my mental health.” “I find the constant pressure of being in a girl group and living up to expectations very hard,” she continued.
