Yami Gautam | The Face of “Glow & Lovely”

One of the most desirable women in 2012, Yami Gautam is an Indian actress who joined Bollywood, leaving her law studies. Yami is known for the roles she played in her debut film Vicky Donor, Badlapur, Sanam Re, Kaabil and Uri: The Surgical Strike. Apart from that, she appeared in commercials. Among which most notable was for Fair & Lovely, which highlighted her. Yami’s fair skin tone and pretty personality made her the face of the brand “Glow & Lovely”(earlier fair & lovely). There was a time when she was known as the ” Fair & Lovely girl”.

Early Life

Coming from a Hindu Brahmin family, Yami Gautam is the elder daughter of Mukesh Gautam, a Punjabi film director and Anjal Gautam. Brought up in Chandigarh, Yami lived in a small family of four people: Her parents and younger sister Surilie Gautam.

Yami after completing her schooling enrolled in a college for an undergraduate course in Law honours. Initially, she aspired to be a part of Indian Administrative Services (IAS) but reaching the age of 20, she attracted towards acting. She left her full-time studies for coming to Bollywood.

Career

Merely at the age of 20, Yami Gautam shifted to Mumbai for making a career in the film industry. She debuted with a television show Chand Ke Paar Chalo, along with playing the lead role in Rajkumar Aaryyan. Later, her most notable role was in the colours show Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam.

Before making her Bollywood debut, Yami appeared in the Kannada film Ullasa Utsaha. Thereafter, she featured in the romantic drama Vicky Donor in 2012. She played the role of Ashima opposite the lead actor Ayushmann Khurrana. The film was the debut of John Abraham’s production house and became a super hit. It emerged as a significant commercial as well as financial success. As a result, with earnings of 645 million, it became one of the highest-grossing films of the year.
Yami Gautam’s performance got critical acclaimations and she became recipient of various awards & nominations. Among these, Zee cine awards for Best female debut and nomination in 58th Filmfare awards were the most notable.

For the next two years, Yami Gautam took an off from Bollywood. With her comeback in 2014, she appeared in two films Total Siyappa and the action thriller Action Jackson. But to her misfortune, both of these films didn’t go well enough at the box office.

Initial Glory

The following year, Yami Gautam appeared in the thriller film Badlapur. She played the role of Misha opposite to the lead character Raghu, played by Varun Dhawan. This film rose to the collection of 770 million. Yami’s performance received critical acclaim.

Up next in 2016, Yami appeared in a series of romantic films with Pulkit Samrat. First was Sanam re with Urvashi Rautela as third lead and Second was Junooniyat. Unluckily, both of the films were failures. In 2017, Yami,  with the great actor Hritik Roshan, did the film Kaabil. It was a revengeful romantic film where the blind Actor fights for multiple rapes of his wife. The film was a financial success with a box office collection of 1.96 Billion. And, reviews were both positive and negative. Later, she kept appearing in the films like Sarkar 3 and Batti Gul Meter Chalu, but none of them was good.

Breakthrough

Yami experienced her breakthrough in the year 2019. It was after the release of a worldwide famous military Action thriller film, Uri: The Surgical Strike. The film was based on the 2016 Uri attack and turned out to be one of the most successful films of the year. Yami’s performance invited appraisals at a huge level.

Recently, Yami appeared in the Ginny Weds Sunny opposite Vikrant Massey. It streamed on Netflix in October 2020.
