Early Life
Born on July 18, 1989, Bhumi Pednekar is a Mumbaikar. She is the daughter of Satish, A former home and labour minister of Maharashtra and Sumitra. Her father died because of oral cancer, after which her mother works as an anti-tobacco activist.
Bhumi did her schooling at Arya Vidya Mandir of Juhu. For betterment in her acting, her parents decided to get her admitted to Whistling Woods International. As a result, they took a study loan. But, unfortunately, Bhumi was expelled due to poor attendance.
Almost within a year, she began working as an assistant director with Yash Raj Films. Gradually she made money and paid the loan back.
Career
Bhumi Pednekar began her Bollywood Journey in the year 2015 with the Romantic comedy film Dum Laga Ke Haisha. She appeared as an overweight woman, for which she gained 12 kgs weight. “Pednekar steals the film with an assured turn, effortlessly making you care for Sandhya, without ever reducing her to a slobbering, self-pitying caricature”, writes Rajeev Masand. The film was a sleeper hit, as a result of which Bhumi was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. After the movie, she made a massive weight loss and shared tips of her process on her social media.
In the same year,2015, Bhumi emerged in mini web series, Man’s world. It was premiered on YouTube. After being absent from the screen for a long time, she entered back with the film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. It was a reality-based story of a young woman who left her in-laws because of open defecation. In this social drama, she appeared in the lead role opposite the great actor Akshay Kumar. The film was a massive success, with earnings of over Rs. 3 Billion gross. As a result, it was the highest-grossing Indian film of all time.
Following this success, Bhumi Pednekar united with Ayushmann Khurrana for Shubh Mangal Saavdhan in the year 2017. The film emerged as a big success and made flooded the box office with earnings of 790 million. This gained Bhumi a nomination for Filmfare Award for Best Actress. “once again reminds us just how convincing she can be as a real, honest-to-goodness young woman in search of love”, comments Shubhra Gupta from The Indian Express. Breakthrough
In the year 2019, Sonchiriya, a crime drama, starred Bhumi Pednekar opposite Manoj Bajpayee and Sushant Singh Rajput. It took her two and half months to prepare for the film. She also learned to fire a gun. Both the film and her performance received subtle reviews.”lend an inevitable sense of womanhood to the silenced”, wrote Rahul Desai from Film Companion.
Subsequently, in 2019, Bhumi appeared in the biographical film Saand ki Aankh. She acted as a septuagenarian sharpshooter, opposite Tapsee Pannu. The film rose to fame with earnings of over 30 crores. Tapsee and Bhumi both got critical appraisals for their performances. In between all the reviews, there was this wonderful one, “Pannu and Pednekar are wonderful and spunky and embrace their parts even though their body language and posture is variable”, written by Udita Jhunjunwala of Mint. Both the actresses jointly awarded with Screen Award and Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics).
Following this league, Bhumi made her appearances in several commercially successful films, including Bala, Pati Patni Aur Woh, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan and Bhoot – Part One: The Haunted Ship.
