Skyroot Aerospace is a private aerospace manufacturing company founded in 2018. The company is also a commercial launch service provider. Skyroot was formed by former scientists and engineers working at ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization). Currently, the company is working towards developing its first launch vehicle, Vikram 1. They plan to launch it around the end of 2022. In 2020, Skyroot Aerospace won the National Startup of the Year Award. Skyroot aims to build and launch a series of small lift launch vehicles specially made for small satellite vehicles. Here’s its success story.
The Beginning
In July 2018, Skyroot Aerospace was founded by former ISRO scientists Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka. After working for six years at ISRO, Pawan Kumar wanted to start his own company. In addition, Vasudevan Gnanagandhi and a group of entrepreneurs, including CureFit founders, also supported the company. Initially, Skyroot Aerospace raised around $4.3 million from contactor Solar Industries. In three and a half years, the company employees a 100-member team. Pawan Kumar is also among the few Indians named in the Forbes 30Under30 Asia list.
Currently, the company is developing its first launch vehicle, Vikram 1. They plan to launch the vehicle by the end of 2022. Step by step, the founders achieved one milestone after another. Skyroot Aerospace is also the recipient of several awards. In March 2021, the team won the Aegis Graham Bell Award under the innovation category. In addition, the company also has several high-level investors, including former WhatsApp CBO Neeraj Arora, Myntra founder Mukesh Bansal, Graph Ventures, Vedanshu Investments, and many more.
Skyroot Aerospace’s story
Within three years, Skyroot Aerospace has already started booking for launches and are engaging customers all over the world. It is the first Indian startup to formally sign an agreement with ISRO regarding using its assets. In September 2021, LinkedIn included Skyroot Aerospace in their list of “The 2021 LinkedIn Top Startups”. In 2022, the company raised around $17 million which is the largest by an Indian space startup yet to date. The company rose to the limelight after test-firing Raman-1. After that, Skyroot became the first Indian startup to test such an engine. Secondly, they also launched a solid rocket motor. Thirdly, Skyroot aims to build technologies for economic access to outer space. In conclusion, their story is very inspiring.
