Early Life

Ryan Gosling was born on 12 November 1980 in London, Ontario, Canada. His father, Thomas Ray Gosling, works as a traveling salesman for a paper mill, and his mother, Donna, is a secretary. Due to his father’s job, Ryan’s family had to move around.

Ryan Gosling’s parents got divorced when he was 13 years old. He and his older sister, Mandi, lived with their mother. Ryan went to Gladstone Public School, Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School, and Lester B. Pearson High School. 

Ryan recalls feeling like an outsider in elementary school, and he was constantly bullied. He did not have any friends until the age of 15 or 16. As the problems increased, Ryan’s mother decided to quit her job and homeschool him. At 17, he decided to drop out of high school and pursue his acting career.

Career as a Child Actor

In 1993, when Ryan Gosling was 12 years old, he participated in an open audition in Montreal. The audition was for the revival of Disney’s hit show The Mickey Mouse Club. Ryan signed a two-year contract as a Mouseketeer and moved to Orlando, Florida.

The other cast members included Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake. Ryan recalls that he became close friends with Justin Timberlake while in Florida; they lived together for six months. Justin Timberlake’s mother also became Ryan’s legal guardian when his mother had to come back to Canada for some work.

In 1995, after the show’s cancellation, Ryan Gosling returned to Canada. He started acting in a family show called Are You Afraid Of The Dark? and Goosebumps.

At 19, Ryan Gosling decided that he wanted to do actual films and go to Hollywood. In 2002, he starred alongside Sandra Bullocks and Michael Pitt in a psychological thriller, Murder By Numbers. Ryan and Michael portrayed teenagers who think they can commit murder. The film grossed $56 million. Ryan’s acting skills earned him appreciation and love from critics and the audience.

In 2004, Ryan starred in the film adaptation of Nicholas Spark’s romantic drama novel, The Notebook. He played the male lead character, Noah Calhoun, and his co-star was a fellow Canadian actress, Rachel McAdams. 

The Notebook was an instant hit and grossed more than $115 million worldwide. Ryan won four Teen Choice Awards and an MTV Movie Award.

Ryan Gosling starred as a drug-addicted high school teacher who formed a bond with a younger student. To prepare for the role, Ryan moved to New York one month before the filming began and lived in a small apartment. He spent his time shadowing an eighth-grade teacher.

Although the movie was not a big hit when it was released, it grossed $4 million worldwide. It got good reviews from the critics. Ryan earned his first nomination for Academy Award for Best Actor. He was now an established actor globally.

Ryan Gosling starred alongside Emma Stone in the romantic film Crazy, Stupid, Love. The film was a blockbuster, and the audience, especially the teenagers, loved it. 

In 2013, Ryan expanded his horizons and starred in a revenge drama film, Only God Forgives. Later in the same year, he announced he was taking a break from acting.

Ryan Gosling returned to films with The Big Short, where he played a salesman. The movie was a nominee for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. He then reunited with Emma Stone for a musical named La La Land. The musical was made on a budget of $30 million and grossed $440 million.

Ryan Gosling owns a Tagine restaurant in Beverly Hills, California. He bought the restaurant impulsively and has done some renovation work by himself.

Ryan dated his Murders By Numbers co-star, Sandra Bullocks, in 2002. The duo decided to end the relationship in 2003. He then started a relationship with his The Notebook co-star, Rachel McAdams. The couple dated from 2005 to 2007 and briefly reunited in 2008.
