Amrita Rao is an Indian actress and Model who is working since 2002, predominantly in Telugu and Tamil Cinema. She debuted with the romantic film Ab ke baras and gained wonderful reviews as well as a nomination for Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Her successful works in hindi film industry are: Vivah , Jolly LLB, Singh Saab the Great and Satyagraha. Along with that, The times of India had included Amrita Rao as one of the 50 Most Desirable Women of 2011.

Early Life

Born in Pune, Maharashtra, Amrita Rao is the daughter of Deepak Rao, an advertising agency owner and Kanchan Rao. She grew up in a family of four: her parents and twin sister Prateeka Rao. Being a descendant of a traditional Konkani family, her grandfather Amrit was a freedom fighter and she is named after him.
She attended Canossa convent girls school up to the completion of her higher studies. Following which actress joined Sophia College for women, Mumbai.

Career

Before beginning her acting journey, Amrita Rao appeared in several commercials with her sister during her college days. The first time she showed up in public was in the music video of the song Woh Pyar Mera. After which, She made her acting debut in 2002 with Ab Ke Baras, a fantasy thriller film. Unfortunately, the film was a box-office failure but Amrita’s performance gained appreciation. Planet Bollywood reviewed her saying, “Amrita Rao comes out the real winner, with her dancing skills, innocent looks and decent acting skills”.

Amrita’s next appearance was in The Legend of Bhagat Singh, a biographical period film. She starred alongside Ajay Devgan and delivered a wonderful performance. It narrated the story of famous freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and the actress who played the role of his wife. Unfortunately, The film didn’t go well and received negative reviews.

Breakthrough

It was in May 2003 when Amrita appeared in the romantic film Ishq Vishk and attained her breakthrough. Starring alongside Shahid Kapoor, Amrita made great chemistry with him. Both the film and her performance gained broad level appraisals. As a result, She earned the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award and IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year.

The Following year, Amrita starred in three films back to back. First among them was the comedy film Masti by Indra Kumar. The film was a critical and commercial success with earnings of over 34 crores worldwide. Her second appearance was a supporting role in  Main Hoon Na, an action comedy film. Starring alongside Shahrukh Khan, Sunil Shetty, Sushmita Sen and Zayed Khan, Amrita’s performance received negative reviews. As a result, The film emerged as the second highest-grossing Indian film of 2004 with over ₹84 crores.

Her next blockbuster was released in 2006. It was a dramatic romance film Vivah in which she appeared with Shahid Kapoor. This film featured the journey of two individuals who were going to be arranged in a marriage. From their first sight to crashes and marriage, everything was demonstrated perfectly. As a result, it became Amrita’s biggest commercial success to date along with being one of the highest-grossing films of the year. Also, She received a nomination for Best actress at Star Screen Awards.

Recent works

In 2013, Amrita appeared in Jolly LLB, a comedy courtroom drama. Both the film and her performance gained positive reviews. As a result, she earned National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.
Next to this, Amrita starred in the action drama Singh Saab the Great. Not a commercial success but the film was an above-average grosser at the box office. Along with the actress’s performance received appraisals. Outlook reviewed her saying, “Amrita Rao plays a role that feels like something she has already done, all the emotional support”
