Gauahar Khan is an Indian model and actress. Her career spans over two decades, and she is famous for her roles in Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, Badrinath ki Dulhania and 14 Phere. She’s the winner of Bigg Boss season 7 and holds a special place in the television and film industry.

Gauahar Khan rose to fame in 2002 after appearing in the famous song by Bombay Vikings, “Hawa Mein Udti Jaye.” At 19, she started working as a model and got the opportunity to model for fashion designers like Manish Malhotra, Ritu Kumar, and Neeta Lulla. Besides being a fantastic actress, model, and dancer, Gauahar is an active participant in animal rescuing campaigns. 

Early Life

On the 23rd of August 1983, Gauahar was born in Pune, Maharashtra, to a practicing Muslim family. Her father’s name is Zafar Ahmed Khan, and her mother’s name is Razia Zafar Khan. Gauahar has four siblings, three sisters and one brother. She is the youngest in her family. For schooling, Gauahar went to The Mount Carmel Convent School in Pune. Growing up, Gauahar shared a deep bond with her elder brother Asad. As a child, Gauahar used to play fun games with her sisters, and all the sisters used to make fun of their only brother. All the siblings shared a loving relationship full of memorable and fun events. Gauahar was admitted to Ness Wadia College of Commerce in Pune for higher studies. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce. 

Beginning of Modeling Career and Struggles

After graduation, Gauahar decided that she wanted to become an actress. However, the path to her dream was full of ups and downs for which she was well prepared. She used to travel in local trains distributing her pictures, hoping she would fetch a modeling or acting project. At 18, she decided to participate in the Femina Miss India Contest. Although she couldn’t win the contest, she won the title of Miss Talented and grabbed the fourth position in the competition. In 2003, Gauahar got her first film offer. Gauahar was extremely happy, and the news of her debut in Bollywood was everywhere. However, her happiness did not last long. After signing the film, she was asked to wait until the shooting began. Then one day, she got the news that she had been dropped from the film and another actress had been cast instead of her. Gauahar was heartbroken.

Later on, Gauahar gave an audition for a film by a National Award-winning producer. The producer asked Gauahar about her birth date and personal information. He said he would get input about Gauahar from his “Pandit” (a Hindu priest) before signing her for the film. Ten days later, Gauahar was told she would never be a successful artist in the industry. She should drop the idea of becoming an actress. Furthermore, the man told her that even if she can grab a role or two, she’ll play shady or side roles. Gauahar felt deeply disappointed by these words. However, she did not give up.

Breakthrough

In 2002, Gauahar appeared in Bombay Viking’s famous song, “Hawa Mein Udti Jaye.” After that, she debuted in Bollywood by making a special appearance in Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Aan: Men At Work.” Following this, she starred in the commercially successful “Shankar Dada M.B.B.S.” Soon, Gauahar started gaining recognition in the industry. In 2009, she participated in the Indian adaptation of Dancing with the stars, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. Gauahar performed many memorable dance acts on the show and became the first runner-up. In the same year, she starred in Yash Raj Films’ production, “Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year.” Gauahar played the role of Koena Sheikh and garnered many positive reviews for her acting skills. The following year, she appeared in a song named “Parda” in Ekta Kapoor’s “Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai.” 

2011-2014

In 2011, Gauahar Khan appeared in Abhinay Deo’s action thriller movie, “Game,” alongside Abhishek Bachchan and Kangana Ranaut. The film couldn’t do well at the box office. However, Gauahar’s performance was appreciated by the critics. The following year, she played the role of Chand Bibi in the commercially successful, Ishqzaade. Gauahar shined in her role. In 2013, she participated in the Indian adaptation of Big Brother, Bigg Boss. Salman Khan hosted the show, and Gauahar remained the favorite contestant of the show throughout the season. As a result, by defeating Tanisha Mukerji, Gauahar lifted the title of Bigg Boss season 7. The following year, she appeared in Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi season 5. 

2015-Present

In 2015, Gauahar made her debut in the Punjabi film industry. She played the role of Gunjan Kaur opposite Jassie Gill. The following year, she played one of the lead characters in Ravi Agrawal’s “Fever.” In 2017, Gauahar played the role of a cop in Karan Johar’s Badrinath ki Dulhania alongside Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. The movie was a commercial success and earned Gauahar many positive reviews. Following these successes, she starred in a period drama film named Begum Jaan. The National Award Winner, Srijit Mukherji, directed the movie. The film revolved around a prostitute who ran a brother between two cities. The film received mixed to negative reviews. But, Vidya Balan and Gauahar Khan got positive reviews for their performances.

Between 2019-2020 Gauahar Khan appeared on several T.V. and web series, including the Indian adaptation of “The Office,” “Tandav,” and “Parchayee.” In 2020, she married Zaid Darbar, son of music director Ismail Darbar. In February 2022, Gauahar played the role of Mayanka Kapoor in the Amazon Prime series, “Bestseller.”
