Matthew McConaughey is an American actor famous for his outstanding acting skills. Born in Texas, USA, Matthew began his acting career at twenty-one. He has won several prestigious accolades like the Academy Award, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, People’s Choice, and MTV Movie Award. In his versatile and exemplary acting career, Matthew has worked with iconic artists like Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich, Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Lopez, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Early Life

On the 4th of November 1969, Matthew David McConaughey was born in Uvalde, Texas, USA. His father, James Donald McConaughey, owned an oil pipe supply business. In contrast, his mother, Mary Kathleen, was an author and kindergarten teacher. Matthew grew up in a dysfunctional family. His parents got divorced twice and married each other thrice. They shared a violent and toxic relationship. Matthew had to go through everything from molestation to physical and mental abuse. His father broke his mother’s finger four times. Once, his mother pulled a knife on his father. Matthew had to undergo severe punishments after making minor mistakes. 

When Matthew was eleven, the family moved to Longview, Texas. For schooling, Matthew attended Longview High School. His parents wanted him to become a lawyer. But Matthew did not wish to become a lawyer. However, he agreed with his parents. Later, in 1988, as a part of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, Matthew went to Warnervale, New South Wales, Australia. Upon reaching, he attended the Gorokan High School for a year. During his time as an exchange student, he did several odd jobs. Matthew worked as a bank teller and an assistant for an attorney. He also used to wash dishes and shove chicken manure. In 1989, Matthew returned to Texas. Later, in 1993, Matthew graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Radio-Television-Film. Matthew was going to attend a law college after graduation. However, he decided to pursue acting instead of law. 

Beginning of Career

While Matthew was still in college, he started taking acting jobs in commercials. In 1991, he appeared in short films. In 1992, Matthew starred in a music video by Trisha Yearwood and Don Henley. The same year, Matthew made his television debut with a mystery documentary show Unsolved Mysteries. The following year, he made his first big screen appearance with the zombie film My Boyfriend’s Back. Matthew played a minor role in the movie. It did not receive positive reviews. However, the same year, Matthew played the role of David Wooderson in the coming-of-age comedy film Dazed and Confused. 

Initial Years

Dazed and Confused was a huge success. The film achieved critical and commercial success. Through the movie, Matthew gained considerable recognition. Between 1994-1996, he starred in several movies like Angels in the Outfield, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, Scorpion Spring, Lone Star, Glory Daze, and A Time to Kill. In A Time to Kill, Matthew played the role of a lawyer. The movie was a massive commercial hit. It made over $45,00,000 worldwide. Matthew won an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance for the role.  In 1997, Steven Spielberg cast him in the historical drama Amistad. The film was a huge critical and commercial success. Later, in 1998, Matthew appeared in the multi-starrer crime film The Newton Boys. The cast consisted of renowned actors like Skeet Ulrich, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Dwight Yoakam. However, the movie did not achieve positive reviews. 

Pathway to Success

In 2001, Adam Shankman cast Matthew alongside Jennifer Lopez in the romantic comedy, The Wedding Planner. The movie achieved commercial success. Between 2001-2011, Matthew starred in several romantic comedies. Many of his films achieved commercial success. However, it was in 2013 when Matthew gained worldwide recognition. Jean-Marc Vallée cast him as Ron Woodroof in the biographical drama Dallas Buyers Club. The movie garnered critical and commercial success, making Matthew a global icon. For the role, Matthew won his first-ever Academy Award for Best Actor. The same year, he appeared in a supporting role in the iconic film The Wolf of Wall Street. In 2014, Matthew gained wider recognition after starring in HBO’s True Detective and Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. Matthew became one of the industry’s most respected actors through these memorable performances.
