Sonam Kapoor is an Indian actor born on 9 June 1985 in Maharashtra, India. She is the daughter of the famous Bollywood star, Anil Kapoor. She is known for her bold, fierce personality and unique fashion sense. Sonam is the recipient of a National Film Award and a Filmfare Award. From 2012 to 2016, she appeared on Forbes India‘s Celebrity 100 list based on her income and popularity. Sonam Kapoor is one of the highest-paid actresses in Bollywood. She is a big supporter of spreading awareness about Breast Cancer and LGBT rights.

Early Life

Sonam Kapoor was born on 9 June 1985 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. She is the daughter of an actor and producer, Anil Kapoor, and a former model and designer, Sunita Kapoor. She is the eldest of the three children born to the couple; her siblings are Rhea Kapoor and Harshvardhan Kapoor. 

Sonam is the niece of film producer Boney Kapoor and actor Sanjay Kapoor; actress Sridevi and producer Mona Shourie (Boney’s wives) were her aunts. Herpaternal cousins are actors Arjun Kapoor, Janhvi Kapoor, and Mohit Marwah, and her maternal second cousin is actor Ranveer Singh.

Sonam initially had an interest in becoming a director or writer. On her father’s recommendation, she became an assistant to Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Career Beginnings

While assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Sonam Kapoor developed an interest in acting. Seeing this, Bhansali decided to cast her in his next film, Saawariya. The cast also had Ranbir Kapoor, Salman Khan, and Rani Mukherji.

Saawariya was an Indian film produced by a Hollywood studio, Sony Pictures Entertainment. On release in 2007, the film was a massive critical and commercial failure. 

Sonam Kapoor’s next appearance was in Delhi-6 in 2009 alongside Abhishek Bachchan and Waheeda Rehman. She plays an aspiring singer. The film got mixed reviews from the audience and critics. 

In 2010, Sonam appeared in Punit Malhotra’s I Hate Luv Storys opposite Imran Khan. The film was Sonam’s first commercial success earning $9 million worldwide. 

Breakthrough

The turning point in Sonam Kapoor’s career came when she worked in Anand L. Rai’s Raanjhanaa in 2013. Her role was that of Zoya Haider, a young Muslim student from Varanasi who got into politics after the murder of her Sikh lover. The film was a success earning $1 billion worldwide. 

After the success of Raanjhanaa, Sonam made an appearance in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. She received ₹11 for the film, made on a budget of ₹300 million, citing her admiration for director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and the film itself as reasons for her appearance. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was also a blockbuster.

Sonam Kapoor next starred with Fawad Khan in the romantic comedy Khoobsurat, an adaptation of the 1980 film of the same name, playing the role initially given to Rekha. Her next release was Prem Ratan Dhan Payo opposite Salman Khan. The film is one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time.

Female-Led Films and Personal Life

In 2016, Sonam Kapoor starred in Ram Madhvani’s biographical thriller, Neerja, made on the life of Neerja Bhanot, an air hostess, who died saving the passengers of a hijacked flight. Neerja was a success and is considered Sonam’s best performance to date.

In 2018, she featured in Shashanka Ghosh’s Veere Di Wedding, a female buddy film co-starring Kareena Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar, and Shikha Talsania. Sonam Kapoor’s next appearance is in Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga. She plays a lesbian who is having trouble coming out in front of her conservative family.

On 8 May 2018, Sonam Kapoor married Indian businessman Anand Ahuja in a Sikh ceremony in Mumbai. The couple welcomed a son in August 2022.
