Raveena Tandon is a national Filmfare award-winning Indian actress working in Bollywood since 1991. Born and raised in Mumbai, she is the daughter of a film director. Raveena began this career just as a try and gradually emerged as one of the graceful actresses. Most notable of her works include; Patthar Ke Phool, Andaz Apna Apna, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Gharwali Baharwali, Daman, Aks and many more.
Early Life
Born on 26 October 1972, Raveena Tandon is the daughter of Ravi Tandon, a film director and Veena Tandon. Grown-up in Mumbai, she lived in a small family of 4; her parents and brother Rajiv. Raveena attended Jamnabai Narsee School in Juhu and finalised higher education. Later, She enrolled at Mithibai College in Mumbai for graduation.
Following this, Raveena got engaged in an internship at Genesis PR and this was when she received her first film offer. She reveals in an interview that she was never into acting but people always complimented her looks and personality. Raveen took it seriously when a photographer Shantanu Sheorey offered her a shoot with him. She gave it a try, and today stands as one of the best actresses.
Career
In the year 1991, Raveena Tandon made her entry in Bollywood with the film Patthar Ke Phool. This successful film earned 6.5 crores at box office. As a result, it became the 4th Highest Grosser of the year. Raveena’s performance was highly appreciated because of which she won Filmfare Award for Lux New Face of the Year.
Initial Success
Up next, Raveena appeared in the films Mohra, Dilwale and Laadla. Three of them were released in 1994 and became commercially successful. For the film laadla, she gained the nomination for Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. And the other films arose to be the seventh biggest hits of the year.
In 1995, for the first time, Raveena Tandon appeared with Shahrukh Khan in the film Zamaana Deewana. But unfortunately, it didn’t do well. Her next hit movies were Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi in 1996 and Ziddi in 1997. Following year, She gave us another blockbuster, Salaakhen. This action film earned 68 crores over the budget of merely 17 crores. Also, Raveen’s performance in the movie Ghulam-E-Mustafa got widely appraised.
The year 1998 featured in eight films, two of which were super successful. Her last release of the year, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, emerged as the second biggest hit of the year. As a result, after this, Raveena was offered the lead role in Kuch kuch hota hai, but she rejected. Other than these films, Vinashak, Pardesi Babu and Aunty No. 1, all of these were unsuccessful that year.
Rise to Prominence
In the following year, 1999, Raveena Tandon got featured in the film Shool. Up next, Bulandi in 2000 and Aks in 2001, came to be her successful ventures. She received critical acclaim for her performances in these films. As a result, Raveen gained many awards, including Filmfare Special Performance Award.
The greatest reward Raveena ever gained was in 2001. She gotNational Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence. Her character was of a wife dominated by her abusive husband. Audience and critics became equally surprised by her performance. “Raveena Tandon lends credibility to the role of a battered wife and walks away with the honours. The pathos she conveys through her expressions makes you realise that she’s a performer of substance”, one of the critics comments while reviewing Raveena. After this, she appeared in several acclaimed films like Satta in 2003 and Dobara in 2004.
