Chandan Roy | The success story of Panchayat’s Vikas Shukla

Chandan Roy is an Indian actor who rose to fame after playing the role of Vikas Shukla in Amazon Prime’s Panchayat. Since the release of the web series, Roy received critical praises from the critics as well as the audience. Belonging to a village in Bihar, Roy always dreamt of going to Bombay and becoming an actor. From childhood, he was inclined towards cinema and wanted to become a part of the film industry. Today, Chandan has a film and three series lined up for release and is busy shooting for more. Here’s his success story.

Early life and career

Chandan Roy belongs to a small village in Bihar, India. While growing up, he always dreamt of going to Mumbai and becoming an actor. His earliest memories of acting go back to the time when he used to watch local plays written by a local group of people. As he grew older, Roy started joining these groups and performed in the plays with them. While children of his age played cricket, he went to cinema halls to watch films like Tiranga, Raja Babu, and Shapath.

After finishing his schooling, Roy moved to Patna to complete his graduation in Mass Communication. While studying in college, he joined theatre and performed in Kalidas Rangalaya to improve his acting skills. For further studies, he joined the Indian Institute of Mass Communication and obtained his Diploma. After graduating, he worked at Dainik Jagran newspaper as a journalist. He also worked with the Shahid Anwar’s Bahuroop theatre group at Jawaharlal Nehru University and the National School of Drama as a freelance actor. While working at Dainik Jagran, Roy decided that the 9-to-5 job is not for him. Eventually, he decided to move to Mumbai. 

Chandan Roy’s acting career

In 2017, Chandan quit his job at Dainik Jagran and moved to Mumbai. Initially, he faced multiple rejections in various auditions and was tagged as “not fit”. His first break with a small role in the TV show Baba Ramdev followed by roles in Crime Alert and Fear Files. His first film, Jamun, was released recently. 

Chandan got his big break with Panchayat, a web series on Amazon Prime. Initially, he auditioned for the role of an electrician but later bagged the role of Vikas Shukla. He shared the screen with veterans actors Raghubir Yadav, Neena Gupta, and TVF’s Jitendra Kumar. Chandan received praises from critics and the audience for his performance in Panchayat. 

Panchayat revolves around the life of an engineering graduate who joins as a Panchayat secretary in a remote village in Uttar Pradesh due to a lack of better job options. It stars Jitendra Kumar in the lead role. The series received a positive response from critics and the performances of the leading actors, scripting, and direction was praised. In an interview, Chandan said, “That series literally changed my life and everyone in the industry started to recognize me. I have worked very hard and had to plan everything very carefully to reach here.”
