Early life

Julia Roberts was born on October 28, 1967, in Georgia, Atlanta. Her parents were one-time actors and playwrights who met while performing in theatres for the armed forces. Later, Roberts’ parents co-founded the Atlanta Actors and Writers Workshop in Atlanta. In addition, they also ran a children’s acting school. In 1972, her parents got divorced and Julia moved to Smyrna, Georgia. Her mother then married Michael Motes, who was often unemployed and very abusive. Roberts disliked her stepfather. Motes and Roberts’ mother had a daughter who died in 2014 due to a drug overdose.

In 1983, Roberts’ mother eventually divorced Motes and stated that her second marriage was the biggest mistake of her life. When Julia was ten years old, her father died due to cancer.
