Khabane Lame, popularly known as ‘Khaby,’ is an Italian social media content creator who gained popularity in March 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world. He rose to fame with his unique style of reacting to overly complicated DIY videos without saying a word. His videos crossed millions of views within a month. As of today, he is one of the most-followed people on TikTok. Besides this, he is an anti-racist and wishes people would live heartily.

Early Life and Struggling Period

Khabane Lame was born to a practicing Muslim family on the 9th of March, 2000, in Ziguinchor, Senegal, a country in West Africa. Soon after his birth, his family moved to Chivasso, a commune in the city of Turin in Italy, looking for a better life. They didn’t have money, and life was hard. Khaby Lame was only a year old at that time. He had three siblings. His family had moved to a local social housing complex. Growing up, Khaby loved playing basketball and football. But, he had dyslexia and was rejected from middle school, high school, and college. Before the pandemic hit the world, Khaby was working as a waiter and a factory worker through which he was earning 1000$ a month. But when Covid came, he was fired from both of his jobs.

In March 2020, Khaby Lame got on social media and started making short and sweet videos in which he used to redo a simple task that was done in an overly complex way by other creators. Where other creators were using the best equipment and makeup, Khaby did not care much about the camera quality or his appearance. His simplicity became a highlight. But, he didn’t just gain popularity overnight. In the beginning, he had only two viewers, his father and his neighbor. In one month, he got nine views and two subscribers. But, he didn’t care and continued to make videos. In his videos, he did not talk, but everyone understood. His videos were simple and funny, which made him very popular, and everyone had a good time watching and sharing his videos.

When Khaby had 1,000 followers, he was looking for a manager. He came across Riggio Alessandro and messaged him on Instagram. When Riggio checked his profile, he found it very interesting. He loved it. Soon, they collaborated. But before they even collaborated, Riggio had told Khaby that he would be an international star one day even though he had only 1,000 followers then. And he was right. In less than two years, Khaby became a worldwide sensation. He went from 0 to 200 million followers.

One of the most significant achievements for Khaby Lame is becoming the face of Hugo Boss. Being a Muslim, Italian, factory worker, and an immigrant, he passed through all the hurdles life tossed at him. Khaby was invited to the Venice Film Festival, Milan Fashion Week, and several popular events worldwide. He has also worked with Netflix, Xbox, Amazon Prime, Dream 11, and his favorite football team Juventus.

When asked about his early life in the public housing complex, which is not looked at fondly by the Italians since it’s a low-income area, Khaby said, “I owe everything to public housing. They taught me education and allowed me to cultivate many bonds.” He has a humble personality which makes him even more likable. When asked about his life after success, he said that he was able to help his family and his friends, and that made him very happy.
