In contrast, her mother, Encarna Sánchez, worked as a hairdresser. Penélope has two younger siblings. Growing up, she spent long hours with her grandmother at her apartment. Penélope had developed a liking for performing arts from a young age. She studied classical ballet for over nine years in her early childhood. During her teenage years, she grew passionate about films. To learn Spanish ballet, Penélope attended Cristina Rota’s school. She also learned theatre for four years. Penélope had decided that she would become a dancer. While in high school, she had already started looking for an agent.

After watching the movie Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! By Pedro Almodóvar, Penélope’s passion for acting grew. To find an agent, she started doing casting calls. However, the agents rejected Penélope multiple times because they felt she was too young. At age fifteen, she auditioned at a talent agency. There were over 300 girls who had given the audition. Penélope won and was all set to make her acting debut. Famous casting director Katrina Bayonas was impressed with young Penélope’s charm. She felt that Penélope had a significant on-screen presence. 

Beginning of Career

After winning the audition, Penélope made her acting debut in 1989. She starred in a Spanish pop group’s music video. For a year, she hosted a Spanish teenagers program. In 1992, Penélope landed her first big-screen role after working on a few projects. She made her debut with Jamón, Jamón. In the movie, she portrayed the role of a young pregnant woman. The film garnered positive reviews. She earned a nomination in the Best Actress category at the Goya Awards. They are one of the most prestigious film awards in Spain. Following the success of her debut movie, Penélope appeared in a supporting role in Belle Époque. The film was a massive commercial and critical success. At the 66th Academy Awards,  Belle Époque won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film.

She stayed in Manhattan. In 1997, she starred in two Spanish and one Swedish film. One of them was the sci-fi drama Open Your Eyes. The movie achieved critical success but failed at the box office. In 1998, Penélope made her American film debut with The Hi-Lo Country. Cruz continued to star in American and Spanish films throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Worldwide Recognition

In 2001, Penélope achieved international success. She starred in two blockbuster movies, Vanilla Sky and Blow. Vanilla Sky was the remake of Penélope’s critically acclaimed film Open Your Eyes. She reprised her role as the leading character’s love interest. During the mid-2000s, Penélope continued to star in American cinema. In 2006, Cruz starred in Bandidas with Salma Hayek and Volver with an ensemble cast. The latter was a massive critical success. In 2008, Penélope’s success continued with two more critically acclaimed movies. She acted in the romantic drama Elegy and Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona. For the latter, Penélope won her first Oscar and BAFTA. Through these milestones, she became one of Hollywood’s most reputed actresses.
