Prithika DasPritam Chakraborty well known as Pritam, is a music director, singer and music composer based in Mumbai. He primarily makes music in the Bollywood Music Industry. He is one of the most awarded music directors in Bollywood. Pritam has won many international and national awards. He worked with famous labels globally.
Personal Life
Pritam Chakraborty was born on 14th June 1971 in Kolkata, India. He was born in a Bengali brahmin family. His mother’s name is Anuradha Chakraborty and his father’s name is Probodh Chakraborty. His father also runs a music school for children. He received his early music training from his father itself and later learned to play the guitar when he was in school.
He completed his schooling at St. Jame’s School, Kolkata. Later he did his graduation in geology from Presidency College, Kolkata. During his Presidency days, he had a band with his fellow batchmates named ‘Jotugriher Pakhi’. He was also a member of the Bangla band ‘Chandeabindoo’. Later he started a band named ‘Metro’ which was also featured in the movie ‘Life in a Metro’.
Pritam joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. He specialised in Sound Recording and Engineering in 1994. While he was studying he got an opportunity to compose music for a Hungarian filmmaker, Istvan Gaal.
Career
Pritam after completing his sound Engineering course went to Mumbai. In Mumbai, he came across budding artists Jeet Ganguli, Shantanu Moitra and Rajkumar Hirani. He made jingles for brands like McDonald’s, Emami, Thums Up etc and tracks for a few tv serials. Pritam-Jeet duo got their first break in Tere Liye, the music was a hit. The duo once again composed music for Yash Raj Films ‘Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai’. Each and every song became successful but after a misunderstanding, the duo went their separate ways.
Way towards success
In the initial days of his solo career, his songs did not work well in his first film. but soon he composed music for the film ‘Dhoom’ and the title track became a massive hit in both Hindi and English language. It became very popular in pubs in the USA, UK, etc. He followed his amazing work for the films. His composition for Anurag Basu’s ‘Life in a… metro’ gained him a lot of popularity and positive reviews. His Sufi song in the movie ‘Once upon a time in Mumbai’ became very popular. He gave many songs from 2010 to 2014.
Pritam’s Comeback
Pritam took a break in 2014 and made a comeback in 2015 with Kabir Khan’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Rohit Shetty’s ‘Dilwale’. Both of the albums became superhits. Gerua from ‘Dilwale’ crossed 100 million views on YouTube in the shortest duration. It ranked in the top slots Globally in countries like Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Oman and many more. He composed the whole soundtrack of ‘Ae Dil hai Mushkil’. His upcoming works include the music of Ayan Mukherjee’s Brahmastra.
Achievements and Awards
Pritam has won 22 Filmfare, 4 IIFA, and 22 Mirchi Music Awards now for his marvellous contribution to the music industry. Other awards that he has won now are the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, ITA awards and Asia Screen Awards. He has won these awards for Best Music Director of the Year, Album of the year, Background Music, etc.
