Anand Mahindra is an Indian businessman and the chairman of the Mahindra Group. The Mahindra Group is a conglomerate that operates in several sectors such as aerospace, automotive, defence, energy, finance, retail, information technology, real estate, and many more. Mahindra’s current net worth is around $1.6 billion. He is the grandson of the co-founder of Mahindra & Mahindra, Jagdish Chandra Mahindra. Early life and education
Anand Mahindra was born on 1 May 1955 in the city of Bombay, India. His late father, Harish Mahindra was an industrialist. Mahindra has two sisters, Anuja Sharma and Radhika Nath. He attended Lawrence School, Lovedale where he finished his early schooling. Later, he went to Harvard University to study architecture and film-making. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard in 1977. Then, he completed his Masters of Business Administration from the Harvard Business School in 1981. Mahindra eventually joined the family business and took over the Mahindra Group.
Anand Mahindra’s career
After graduating from the Harvard Business School, Anand Mahindra joined Mahindra Ugine Steel Company Ltd. He worked as an assistant to the finance director. Later, in 1989, he became the President and Deputy Managing Director of the company. Anand pioneered the diversification of the Mahindra Group into new sectors such as real estate and hospitality. In 1991, he became the deputy managing director of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. Later, Anand was made the vice-chairman and eventually the chairman of the Mahindra Group in August of 2012. In 2016, Mahindra became the only owner of the group. He also established an NGO for the education of underprivileged girls called Nanhi Kali.
In addition to taking over the Mahindra Group, he is also a member of the US-India Business Council. Anand is also the chairman of the India Advisory Council. He is also a huge advocate of using design for human happiness and is the president of the India Design Council. The Economist named Mahindra as the face of Indian capitalism and Forbes Magazine recognized him as the ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ in 2013. Today, the Mahindra Group is one of the top industrial conglomerates in India with a worth of US$19 billion. Mahindra & Mahindra is a household name in the country.
