Ardeshir Godrej

Godrej was founded by Ardeshir Burjorji Sorabji Godrej and his brother Pirojsha Burjorji in 1868. They were the first to use aircraft for transportation and mass-produce refrigerators.

Early Life

Ardeshir was born in 1868, the first of six children to a Parsi-Zoroastrian family of Bombay. His father, Burjorji Godrej, dealt in real estate. In January 1871, his father had the family name changed to Godrej. He was a law student like many other financially well-off Indians. But the subject didn’t interest him, and soon he returned to India.

In 1890, Ardeshir married Bachubai (Bachubai), who had just turned eighteen. On 25 April 1891, Bachubai and Ardeshir’s second cousin decided to climb to the viewing platform of the 85-meter high Rajabai Tower. At the top, one or two miscreants accosted them. According to legend, the two women jumped rather than give in to their demands. Both lost their lives.

Also, after returning to India, he started his job as an assistant in a chemist shop. Through which he began taking an interest in manufacturing surgical instruments. Unfortunately, this didn’t pan out and became his first business, but he was determined to do well.

Career of Ardeshir Godrej

Later, he received a loan from Merwanji Cama, a Parsi businessman, to start a new business of lock-making. This incident also started the establishment of the Godrej empire. His locks were widely famous all around India because they were cheap and of good quality. After his locks became very popular, he began manufacturing safes and other security devices. These products were so popular that even the queen of England used one during her tour to India in 1921!

When the Godrej Brothers began their business, they used vegetable oil to make soap instead of animal fat. When his younger brother Pirojsha joined him in business, they became the Godrej Brothers. This Indian-based company flourished, and Ardeshir lived a simple life while establishing an Indian-based business organization.

This quiet man was the foundation of today’s nationwide call Make-in-India. Ardeshir passed away in 1936. One year later, Godrej and Boyce made INR12 lakh revenue from their business. This accomplishment is quite significant in India’s growth and development history.
