Demi Moore is an American actress who was one of the highest-paid actresses through the 1980s and 1990s. She is also known as a prominent figure in the movement for equal salaries for women in the American film industry. Early life and struggles

Demi Moore was born November 11, 1962, in Roswell, New Mexico. Before Moore was even born, her biological father left her mother after a two-month marriage. When she was three months old, Moore’s mother remarried a newspaper advertising salesman. Her stepfather changed jobs frequently due to which the family moved around the country a lot. Moore’s mother had a long arrest record which included arson and drunk driving. In 1990, she broke off contact with her mother. Her stepfather died by suicide in 1980 while her mother died of cancer in 1998.

As a child, Moore suffered from strabismus, a condition in which the eyes do not properly align with each other. Moore eventually underwent two operations to get it corrected. In addition, she also suffered from kidney dysfunction. At the age of 14, Moore lived with her grandmother in her hometown of Roswell, away from her mother and siblings. At the age of 16, she moved out of her family’s home and also left high school in her junior year. In an interview in 2019, Moore stated that she was raped by a man at the age of 15. Her childhood was far from easy and she suffered through a lot.

Moore’s 17-year-old neighbour, German actress Nastassja Kinski, inspired her to take up acting and she enrolled in drama classes. After making her film debut in 1981, Moore gained recognition with roles in films like Blame It on Rio, St. Elmo’s Fire, and About Last Night… . In 1990, she had her breakthrough with the film Ghost which is Moore’s most successful film till date. The film grossed over US$505 million at the box office and became the highest-grossing film of the year. After the success of Ghost, she starred in films like A Few Good Men, Disclosure, and Indecent Proposal which opened at the number one spot at the box office and were blockbuster hits. 

In 1995, Moore became the highest-paid actress in Hollywood. In 1996, Moore became the highest-paid actress in film history when she received $12.5 million to star in Striptease. Moore went off-screen for three years and returned in 2003 playing a villain in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. Following that, Moore’s has been a part of various successful films. Today, she has a net worth of around $200 million. Moore is also viewed as a pioneer for equal pay in Hollywood.
