The early life of Hari Menon
Hari Menon was born in 1963 in Bandra West, Mumbai, into a middle-class family. Completed schooling from Lawrence School, Lovedale. Further joined to Birla Institute of Technology and Science. Graduated in 1983 B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kerala. Later he got an MBA degree from Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania.
Initially, in his childhood, he used to play cricket, which led him to be a member of the Karnataka Cricket Association. He also has an MS degree in Industrial Engineering in Operations Research from Oklahoma State University. His focus on learning shows that he is always eager to learn new things and explore.
Hari Menon Career
Soon after completing graduation initially joined Consilium as a Software Engineer. Further joined as manager at Accenture working for three years shifted to Aspect i2 Technologies as a Senior Director or product management. He also served as vice president of Corporate Strategy and Marketing at Bristlecone In from 2003 to 2004.
So finally started his entrepreneurship journey in 2004 by founding Tumri and maintained as CEO until 2012, after it was acquired by Collective Media and became a vital part of Adobe.
Hari Menon as Entrepreneur
Before Big Basket came into the picture, Hari and his other five friends started a similar application to Amazon and Flipkart called Fabmart. I didn’t see much success in it for over a year also, and there was no source of enough revenue. Hence, they have to shut down the online store and start a physical version store. Since then from 0 income to setting 300 store it shows growth. Further, they expanded with Trinethra, another retail store.
When Hari Menon decided to sell Fabmart to Aditya Birla Group, he planned to set new retail trends. Hence Hari Menon, Vipul Parekh, V S Sudhakar, Abhinay Choudhari, and V S Ramesh founded Big Basket in October 2011.
About BigBasket
It was well-planned out business strategies that primarily targeted the larger cities. It has around 1000 brands and over 20,000 products on the Bigbasket online grocery store. By growing slowly and steadily, it delivered 50,000 orders daily, or 1, 50, 00,000-2, 50, 00,000 orders monthly. Another point that adds value to BigBasket is its ambassador, Sha Rukh Khan, running TV advertisements.
Personal life and awards
Hari Menon married Shanti Menon, the founder of The Deen’s Academy. Shanti is the daughter of E Sreedharan, well known as a Metro Man of India. And Hari Ranked 4th by YourStory in the Top 100 Indian startups with gravity-defying momentum in 2015. And he was awarded as Icon Award for Entrepreneurship at Audi RITZ Icon Awards 2015.
