Harish Salve is an Indian senior advocate in the Supreme court of India. He served as the Solicitor General of India for three years too. Salve has been part of numerous famous cases like the  Kulbhushan Jadhav case and the hit and run case of Salman Khan.

Early Life

Harish Salve was born into a multi-religious family with liberal secularism at home. His father, N. K. P. Salve, was a chartered accountant and prominent politician of the Indian National Congress.

While his mother, Ambriti Salve, was a doctor and his grandfather (father of P.K. Salve) was a successful criminal lawyer. Also, his great-grandfather (father of P.K. Salve) was a Munsif (subordinate judge). And also has sister Arundati Upadhyaya.

Salve completed his education at St. Francis de’Sales High School, Nagpur, Maharashtra. Then completed his Chartered Accountancy from ICAI and LLB from Nagpur University. The former Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde was his classmate in school. Before he became a lawyer, Salve practiced Chartered Accountancy in taxation.

The career of Harish Salve

He began his legal career in 1980 at J. B. Dadachandji & Co., first as an intern and then as a full-time lawyer. During this time, he assisted Palkhivala in the Minerva Mills case. Salve was later designated a Senior Counsel by the Delhi High Court. Salve worked with former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee from 1980 to 1986. He declined to be nominated for a second three-year term due to “personal reasons” when his first term ended in November 2002.

Harish Salve QC is an Indian senior advocate who practices at the Supreme Court of India. He served as the Solicitor General of India from November 1, 1999, to November 3, 2002. Later on January 16 2020, the courts of England and Wales appointed him as a Queen’s Counsel.

The Supreme Court has appointed Salve as an Amicus Curiae for some cases in the past. They were mainly related to the cases of preservation of the environment. However, he recused himself from this position during a hearing on illegal mining because he had previously appeared for one or more parties. Later in 2013, Gray’s Inn admitted him, and subsequently, he joined Blackstone Chambers.

Harish Salve and Meenakshi Salve were married for 38 years, had a two daughters – Saaniya Salve and Sakshi Salve. They divorced in 2020. Harish has since moved to North London and is now a sculptor. Later, he married Caroline Brossard, an artist, on October 28, 2020. Brossard was living in London at the time of their marriage.

Salve has rewarded with  third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India called “Padma Bhushan”,  also honored by the Rotary Club of Madras. And was the Queen’s Counsel for the courts of England and Wales.
