Swank calls her mother the inspiration for her acting career and life. In California, she dropped out of high school because Swank “felt like such an outsider”. In an interview, she said, “I didn’t feel like I fit in. I didn’t belong in any way and didn’t even feel like the teachers wanted me there. I just felt like I wasn’t seen or understood.” Swank further said that she became an actor because she wanted to be the people she read about in books or saw in a movie.
