Little Mix is a british girl band formed in 2011. The band came together in the eighth series of the popular reality show The X Factor. At the time, the group consisted of four members: Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirwall, Jesy Nelson, and Leigh Anne Pinnock. Little Mix’s music style is pop, R&B, and dance-pop. 

Time in The X Factor

Little Mix is The X Factor’s one of the most successful acts, although, they were not always a band. In 2011, Edwards, Thirwall, Nelson, and Pinnock were seen auditioning for the show as solo artists but fate had other plans and the four girls were put together by the judges. Little Mix was came in form on 28 October 2011. Soon, they became the first girl band ever in the history of The X Factor to reach the finals. 

On 11 December 2011, Little Mix became the winner of the show. The first band ever in the history of the show to become the winner.

The band did a live performance of their first single ‘Cannonball’ in the finals which later came out worldwide.

Career and debut album

Little Mix released their debut single ‘Wings’ in August 2012. A few months later, in November their debut album DNA came out. The album had an amazing breakthrough, it charted no.3 in both Ireland and UK. 

In January 2013, the group signed a deal with Columbia Records.

DNA- This album came out with 3 singles, ‘Wings’, ‘DNA’, and ‘Change Your Life. It was an amazing start to the journey of girls as a band. In the US, ‘Wings’ charted number 79 on Billboard Top 100. On 4 March 2013, ‘How ya Doin’ was announced as the final single from DNA. It featured Grammy-winning artist Missy Elliot.

Other Albums

Salute- Little Mix’s sophomore album came out on 11 November 2013 in the UK and 4 February 2014 in the US. On 23 September 2013, ‘Move’ came out as the first single from the album. ‘Little Me’ was the second single. Both the songs reached on top of the charts in both US and UK. On 5 April 2014, ‘Salute’ came to be known as the third single from the album. 

Get Weird- At the 2015 Brit Awards, Little Mix revealed their third studio album as a “whole new sound”. In May 2015, the first single ‘Black Magic’ was released, and the song charted at number 1 in the UK for 3 weeks. The album itself came out on 6 November 2015, and Get Weird scored a debut at number 2 in the UK. It sold over 600,000 units and became the group’s best-selling album yet. On 13 March 2016, Little Mix went on The Get Weird Tour.

Glory Days- True to its name, this album brought glory days for the band. Released on 18 November 2016, Glory Days sold 96,000 copies in its first week in the UK, which broke a record by The Spice Girls. The singles like ‘Shout out to my ex’, ‘Touch’ and ‘No more sad songs’ reached the top of the charts and remained there for weeks. 

LM5- The first single ‘Woman Like Me’ feat. Nicki Minaj came out in February 2018 and the whole album was on 6 July 2018. Singles like ‘Joan of Arc’ and ‘Told You So’ did well on the charts in UK and Ireland. LM5 turned out to be a huge success. Little Mix embarked on LM5: The Tour on 16 September 2019.

Jesy Nelson’s Departure 

On 14 February 2020, Little Mix took to their social media handles to announce the departure of Jesy Nelson from the band. Nelson’s reason to discontinue the band was her mental health struggles. After her departure, the group announced that they will continue as a trio.

‘Confetti’ was Nelson’s last album with the band.

Journey as a trio and Hiatus

Confetti album was a huge success. With the single ‘Sweet Melody’, the band scored their 5th UK number one single. 

On 19 August 2021, the band announced that they will release their greatest hits album known as Between Us. The album was a celebration of the group’s 10th anniversary.

Between Us came out on November 10 with five new songs. 

Unfortunately on 2 December 2021, Little Mix announced that they will be taking a short break after their Confetti Tour. The reason for the break is to focus on their personal lives and health. Although, the group promised to come back together in the future. The last performance of the band in o2 Arena, London had live streaming. It was known as Little Mix: The Last Show (for now…). 

The news of hiatus disheartened the fans but the band’s constant promises to come back stronger and better give them hope.
