Working in Bollywood since 2007, Mouni Roy is an Indian actress and model who appears in predominantly in films and Television shows. Apart from that, she is a singer and Kathak Dancer. Mouni gained popularity with the show Devon Ke Dev…Mahadev in 2011. Later, Her appearance in the Television series Naagin enhanced her.
Early Life
Born on 27 September 1985, Mouni Roy is the daughter of Anil Roy, office superintendent of the Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad and Mukti, a theatre artist. Being born as a granddaughter to Shekhar Chandra Roy, a well known Jatra Theatre Artist, Mouni, from her childhood, was into acting.
Mouni attended Kendriya Vidyalaya in Baburhat, Cooch Behar, for her higher schooling. She enrolled at Jamia Milia Islamia for an undergraduate degree in Mass Communication. Although Mouni joined the course on her parents’ insistence, she left it midway to begin her journey to Mumbai: The city of dreams.
Career
Mouni Roy initiated her career with minor roles like background dancer for the song “Nahi Hona.” It was in 2006 when she appeared in The Ekta Kapoor show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. This drama show aired on StarPlus for eight consecutive years, among which Mouni starred in the last two years as Krishna Tulsi. Up next, she made appearances in the shows Kasturi and Do Saheliyaan. Before acting in Do Saheliyaan in 2010, Mouni won the show Zara Nachke Dikha in sharing with Jennifer Winget and Karishma Tanna.
Subsequently, Mouni appeared in the series Devon Ke Dev…Mahadev. It was a mythological series aired on LifeOk for three consecutive years. Mouni played the character of sati, which ended in the first year. After that, in 2013, she played the lead role of Meera in the show Junoon – Aisi Nafrat Toh Kaisa Ishq.
Breakthrough
The year 2015 saw Mouni Roy in the Television show Naagin. She played the role of Shivanya in this supernatural series. The show gained a broad level of appreciation and high TRPs. After acting in 2 seasons of the show, Mouni became a household name.
Her chemistry with the lead actors Arjun Bijlani in season 1 and Karanvir Bohra in season 2 gained critical appreciation. Eventually, Mouni got established as a leading actress in Indian Television Industry. The show fetched her first award for ITA Award for Best Actress Popular at the Indian Television Academy Awards 2016.
Bollywood Entry
Mouni Roy made her Bollywood debut with the film Gold in 2018. It was a historical sports drama based on India’s first Hockey team. Opposite the actor Akshay Kumar, she played the role of Monobina Das. Her performance was critically appraised. “Mouni Roy as Akshay’s wife Monobina is just the right mixture of crotchety and charming. With her grasp of Bengali, she brings that extra something to the film’s milieu.”, wrote Hindustan Times. The film was a super successful venture with global earnings of 1.5 Billion. Along with that, it was the first Indian film to be released in South Arabia.
By the end of 2018, Mouni starred in an item song Gali Gali. It featured in the Hindi version of K.G.F: Chapter 1. The actress gained appreciation for her dance performance and collected over 3.5 Billion views on YouTube.
The following year, Mouni starred in Romeo Akbar Walter alongside John Abraham and Jackie Shroff. The film received mixed reviews. Though her performance was good enough, the film underperformed at the box office. Up next, the film Made in China featured Mouni. It was released on the occasion of Diwali, and her performance was critically acclaimed. “a surprise package. Though given a small role, Mouni comes with much power, owning every bit of the screen time she gets in the film.”, reviews India Today. This was a commercially successful venture.
Present and Further
In 2020, Mouni gave her OTT Debut in the film London Confidential. She played the character of Uma Kulkarni, a pregnant R&AW spy. Although the film did not go well, Mouni received pretty good reviews. “Mouni Roy shows conviction in playing her part and is in a different avatar from her earlier performances in Gold and Made in China.”, wrote Rediff.com
Mouni Roy is all set to rock with her upcoming major project Brahmāstra. This is a superhero trilogy in which actress will appear alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.
